Native American Leadership in Philanthropy

Lunch will be served on a first come, first served basis.

Description: While various studies have engaged with minority representation on the boards and staff of foundations and the implications of disproportionate representation, few have explored the special case of Native Americans-a group that accounts for just 1% of the total U.S. population yet receives only a fraction of a percent of the total grant awards of large foundations.  This study engages with this population in two ways: first, a quantitative phase seeking to gather data about the number of Native American leaders in the philanthropic world and, second, a qualitative, interview-based phase which asks these leaders to share the lessons they have learned and the unique trajectories that have led each of them to their current position.
