Public Speaking for Non-Native Speakers

Public Speaking for Non-Native Speakers A Workshop with Dr. Branca Telles Ribeiro and Julius Adrian R. Alip Moderated by Mihir Mankad 6-7:30PM Wednesday, March 5, 2014 Cason Room, Taubman 102 Harvard Kennedy School This workshop aims specifically to explore concerns non-native speakers have when addressing a native-speaking audience, and identify concrete skills speakers can employ in the short-term to overcome these barriers. We will discuss cognitive biases that audiences hold, and how these impact our ability to best deliver our message. We’ll also discuss how to balance being genuine and true to our own identities on stage with an understanding of audience perceptions. Our aim throughout is for these workshops to focus on concrete strategies for dealing with biases rather than on the root causes of those biases.
