Rising Crime and Crime Reduction Strategies in 21st Century Japan

Mr. Kanayama has had a distinguished career at Japan’s National Police Agency, where he has held prominent positions dealing with criminal investigations, white-collar crimes, counter-terrorism, and education and training. He has served as the Commissioner of the Prefectural Police at Tochigi and Yamanashi prefectures. His other prior positions include: Chief of the Chubu Regional Police Academy; Chief of NPA’s International Firearms Office; First Secretary at the Japanese Embassy in Bangkok; and Assistant Councilor at the Office of National Security Council. During the 2005-06 academic year, he conducted research on the U.S. criminal justice process at Harvard’s Program on U.S.-Japan Relations. His current research interests focus on strategies for reducing Japan’s rising crime, transparency of criminal investigations in the U.S. and Japan, and the investigation and trial process for murder cases in Massachusetts.
