STUDY GROUP: Real-Time Politics: Stop the Insanity

Guest: Scott Montgomery, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his role establishing and editing the St. Petersburg Times’ Politifact. When is it the press’ responsibility to state things as fact, such as Obama being a citizen? Why do news outlets still find it necessary to balance a story on climate change with someone who denies global warming is real? What role do journalists have in truth-squading politicians? When it’s a world of sound bites and, often, lies that reporters let stand, how can anyone understand who it is they should be voting for? And should journalists be paying attention to presidential candidates such as Ron Paul? We’ll hear from a journalist at the heart of the birth certificate debate during the 2008 campaign and talk about viral rumors that can break candidates at the speed of a tweet. We’ll also discuss the tea party and the sense of outrage driving activists’ political activity. The session will take place just after the GOP debate in New Hampshire, so we’ll spend some time fact-checking what was said on stage.
