The “Wingman” in the War Room: A Private Sector Perspective on Presidential Politics

Session 6. Anatomy of a Debate (April 1): FDR Your campaign has had its ups and its downs. You are approaching a critical phase of debates. This is your opportunity to let the voters see you directly, not through the filtered press or through thirty-second ads. Your performance on stage could well determine the outcome of the election, but there are other critical aspects of Fight Night not seen by the public. What happens before fight night? What items are negotiated with other campaigns and how? What happens in the War Rooms behind the stage and at Headquarters to reinforce your performance and mitigate mistakes? What is the Surrogate operation and what really happens in the Spin Room? We will hear from members of a Presidential Debate Team, and no spin will be allowed. Guests: • Beth Meyers, Sr. Strategist, RFP and Fall 2013 IOP Fellow • Gail Gitcho, Communications Director RFP • Peter Flaherty, Sr. Strategist, RFP • Ben Ginsberg, Chief Debate Negotiator RFP Space will be determined by a lottery. Apply here by noon on Monday March 31st - http://www.iop.harvard.edu/lottery/apply/23574. ***All study groups are off-the-record and not for media coverage***
