Writing Workshop presented by Luci Herman, Harvard Kennedy
School, Lecturer in Public Policy.
This workshop teaches the basic strategies and structures for
effective executive summaries and briefing books. The workshop
illuminates basic steps that will turn complex ideas into crisp and
powerful arguments guaranteed to capture the attention of a busy
decision-maker. You will learn strategies to synthesize complex
data into a succinct and coherent whole that allows a
decision-maker quickly to understand the problem, sort through the
evidence, and be persuaded of optimal solutions. You will learn how
to foreground the central issue, summarize the status quo,
illuminate the stakeholders, signpost the pros and cons of your
reasoning for change, and highlight key findings and
recommendations. You will learn writing and presentation strategies
that not only advise elite decision makers but garner support from
key constituencies.
