Voting booths in Ukraine

Who: Alexa Milanytch MC/MPA 2015
Where: I am here in Brovary, Ukraine.
What: "I was an international election observer serving with the Ukrainian Congressional Committee of America (UCCA) on the outskirts of Kyiv in a town called Brovary. Over the course of 12 hours, I visited eight precincts and, for an additional seven hours, observed the counting of the votes (FYI, that's the average amount of time needed to count votes and complete paperwork). In Brovary, the average voter turnout was about 65% and an overwhelming majority voted for Poroshenko. It was a day to be celebrated in Brovary and throughout most of Ukraine. This was the will of the people and I observed free, democratic, transparent elections."

A clinic in Sierra Leone

Who: Shuhei Ueno, MC/MPA 2012
Where: I am here in Sierra Leone.
What: “This picture was taken in front of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation in Sierra Leone, in March 2014, during a business trip there to discuss how Japan could help improve nursing skills for children's health.

"After HKS and one month as a visiting fellow at Partners in Health in Boston, I came back to Japan to work for the Japanese governmental aid agency, JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency). I now work for health sector projects mostly in Western African countries, such as a mother and child health impact study in Ghana and a polio eradication loan program in Nigeria. In March 2014, I had the privilege of visiting Sierra Leone for the first time and joining existing efforts there to provide better health care services in the country. I enjoyed meeting people who work to improve people's lives locally and globally. It is great to be working in this dynamic field, but sometimes I do miss my HKS year!”

Parliment building in Northern Ireland.

Who: Allison Shapira, MC/MPA 2010
Where: I am here in Northern Ireland.
What: "I am pictured here outside the Northern Ireland Parliament building with the mentors and mentees of the Vital Voices Bank of America Global Ambassadors Program, which is focused on empowering emerging women leaders to contribute to the economies of post-conflict and ongoing peacebuilding countries. I had the great honor of teaching public speaking to this inspirational group of women.

"Two years after graduating from HKS, I moved to Washington, DC to launch my company teaching public speaking and presentation skills as a way to help people find their voice and their courage to speak. One of my areas of focus is working with women around the world, teaching them public speaking as a form of economic and political empowerment. This work has brought me to Northern Ireland, East Africa, and the Middle East. In my work, I use my negotiation and leadership training from the Kennedy School to teach people how to build coalitions and understand systems so that when they stand up to speak, they don't have to speak alone."
