May 1, 2008 – Linda Bilmes, lecturer in public policy at Harvard Kennedy School, was awarded the American Friends Service Committee's (AFSC) annual Speaking Truth to Power award at a ceremony in Chicago. The AFSC cited Ms. Bilmes’ “impressive scholarship on the economic cost of war and research on wounded veterans, your willingness to bring these important issues to the public arena, and your partnership in our Cost of War project.” Previous Speaking Truth to Power Award recipients include author Studs Terkel; Calvin Morris, executive director, Community Renewal Society; and Charlie Richardson and Nancy Lessing, co-founders of Military Families Speak Out.
Bilmes is co-author, with Columbia University Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz, of "The Three-Trillion Dollar War: The True Cost of the War in Iraq," published by Norton Books. She has held several senior positions in government, including Assistant Secretary and Chief Financial Officer of the US Department of Commerce, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Administration, and US Representative to several high-ranking commissions. Bilmes teaches budgeting, applied budgeting, and public finance.
