Company Description: The Healthcare Education Project is a collaborative initiative of 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East and Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) to conduct education and advocacy efforts on critical health care issues.  The primary goal of the Project’s community organizing program is to develop and sustain a healthcare coalition by allying with progressive community leaders who seek to protect and advance the rights of working families in New York State.

1199 SEIU is the largest local in the United States, and the largest healthcare workers union on the eastern seaboard, representing over 275,000 healthcare workers employed in hospitals, nursing homes, home care, clinics and social service agencies in New York, Massachusetts, Maryland and the District of Columbia. GNYHA is a trade association representing more than 250 not-for-profit hospitals and continuing care facilities, both voluntary and public, in the metropolitan area and throughout the State, as well as in New Jersey, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

Job Description:

Working under the supervision of the Lead Organizers, she or he will be directly responsible for developing collaborations with residents, religious leaders, community organizations and businesses to establish progressive community-based coalitions organized to protect and defend the right of working families in New York State, with a focus on access to affordable, quality healthcare.  The Community Organizer must have extensive knowledge of his or her respective neighborhoods.  .  Successful candidates will help guide the development and implementation of multiple neighborhood action plans.  As needed the CO will plan events, recruit volunteers and attend community meetings.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with Lead Organizer, maintaining regular communications.

  • Represent Campaign at forums, meetings and conferences.

  • Prepare written reports and compile statistical data, as required.

 
Qualifications:  

SKILLS:

  • Commitment to social change

  • Ability to work well with all religious, cultural, ethnic and social groups

  • Ability to develop meaningful and productive personal relationships

  • Self-discipline and ability to structure own time

  • Previous social justice, political or progressive campaign experience with successful execution in coalition building is a plus.

  • Computer competency (Word, databases) required

  • These positions require long hours, including early mornings, late evenings meetings, and weekends. 

  • Foreign language skills helpful, but not required. 

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills

Salary and Benefits:   40k. Excellent benefits.
