Company Description: Local 615 is the 16,000 member building service local for New England representing janitors, custodians, security officers and maintenance workers employed in the commercial office, residential, and higher education sectors. Local 615 is committed to building a strong Union based on membership participation and leadership development. We represent workers at many area colleges and universities including Harvard, MIT, Boston College, Boston University, U-Mass Boston, Northeastern, Brandeis University, and many other colleges, community colleges, and high schools.

Local 615 is part of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), a partner in the national Change to Win (CTW) federation and the fastest growing union in the United States.

Job Description: The Organizer will work with SEIU members in college, university and secondary school settings to build a stronger union, with assignments including the following:
  • Identify the issues of groups of workers at work sites
  • Effective communication in house calls, site visits, and group meetings
  • Identify and recruit worksite Leaders
  • Organize with workers to take action on problems at work and in the community
  • Mobilize Union members for actions
  • Make and execute weekly work plans to support the work of the Union
  • Coordinate rallies, strikes and other actions
 
Qualifications:   The successful applicant for the Organizer position is able to:
  • Inspire workers and members in the Union’s jurisdiction.
  • Ask for help when it is needed and use feedback to improve performance.
  • Work hard to win justice for workers in the Union’s jurisdiction.
  • Communicate effectively in English, as well as Spanish and/or Portuguese.
  • Travel between various sites in short time periods, ascend flights of stairs, and participate in marches and demonstrations of at least 3 hours in duration.
  • Demonstrate a commitment working for justice.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Communicate effectively (listening, speaking, and writing).
  • Use a computer including word processing, data base and e-mail applications.
  • Work long and irregular hours, including some nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Drive a car (valid Drivers’ License and car with insurance is required).

Salary commensurate with experience; benefits are excellent including health and dental insurance, pension and paid vacation leave.
