Job Description: Clean Water Action is currently seeking an Online Communications Manager who would ideally be located at a Clean Water Action office (e.g. Ann Arbor, MI, Minneapolis, MN, New England, Philadelphia, PA Washington, DC). This position will lead the organization’s national efforts to use the Internet and other New Media tools to implement a cutting edge communications and outreach strategy to support Clean Water Action’s grassroots programs, with some initial emphasis on programs in Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and other priority states.

The Online Communications Manager is responsible for creating and driving the organization’s overall online communications strategy. This includes management of Clean Water Action’s Web site and email communications. The position supports a number of critical organizational functions such as communications, media, fundraising, and organizing/advocacy. The Online Communications Manager will report to a national senior staff director and coordinate with an Online Communications Work Group and vendor to integrate the Web site and email tools completely with the organization’s other communications, fundraising, and outreach strategies.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Online Communications Work Group to develop and implement online campaign strategies that support campaigns, issues, volunteer recruitment, outreach and fundraising efforts
  • Maintain the organization’s Web site including content, graphics, multimedia, and updating
  • Stay current with emerging communications technologies while developing and implementing new techniques and innovations that enhance the organization’s current strategies online and elevate personalization of email contacts with members
  • Train, assist and consult with staff around the country in how to carry out and support effective on-line communications. Develop content of training programs and materials.
  • Write content independently and with input from other staff
  • Manage relationships with outside Web consultants and vendors
  • Work to promote the site using banner advertising, search engine advertising, and viral marketing
  • Analyze Web site and campaign statistics and research, collect critical information and data that can be applied to future efforts and strategies
  • Work with the National Information Services Manager and other senior managers to grow, maintain and maximize the effective use of Clean Water Action’s email database
  • Manage online information requests and queries
  • May include supervision of other staff and interns
 
Qualifications:   Skills:

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of developing and implementing online e-advocacy/organizing and fundraising campaigns. He/she should have working understanding of content management systems and their role in online organizing efforts. He/she will be capable of managing the day-to-day activities around the overall management of the online strategy. The right candidate needs to have the experience to champion causes and a successful history of working across teams and departments to focus efforts toward a common goal. Strong writing and listening skills are essential, as is the ability to manage several projects simultaneously under the pressure of tight deadlines. Must be willing to travel on occasion to Clean Water Action offices throughout the country.

The candidate should have experience in an organization, campaign, or agency setting. A blend of in-house non-profit and agency experience would be beneficial.

This person will be required to effectively perform in this role with the ability to establish and maintain ongoing relationships with outside vendors. H/she is also expected to develop and implement strategies in conjunction with and drawing on the resources of a variety of internal functional groups.

Experience:

  • Knowledge of online fundraising, advocacy, and communications strategies
  • Experience managing a website used for e-advocacy and online fundraising
  • Aware of new technical and communications innovations and strategies
  • Familiarity with, and ability to develop innovative on-line communication and campaign techniques and uses
  • HTML and web site design skills are desirable. Additional technical abilities a plus
  • Experience as a trainer is desirable.
  • Hard worker, self-starter, highly motivated hands-on professional that inspires others with his/her personal dynamics
  • Strategic - Capable of developing and implementing highly proactive strategies for the organization
  • Strong leadership and impact skills; creative and innovative; demonstrability bright; a quick thinker

Education:

The qualified candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
