Job Description:

The Program Associate will be part of the Leadership Development Project and will assist with “Generation Change”, a new initiative at the Center for Community Change. “Generation Change” is devoted to recruiting, training, and supporting a new generation of community organizers and non-profit leaders. The Program Associate will work closely with the Leadership Development staff to launch a summer internship and year-long fellowship program for individuals interested in community organizing careers, maintain a national data base of organizing and service learning opportunities, and develop systems to track and support grassroots organizers and non-profit leaders throughout the U.S.   In addition, the Program Associate will assist in the development of new online tools and media strategies to highlight and support recruitment, training and employment opportunities for the community organizing sector as a whole.

The ideal candidate has strong writing, computer and organizational skills and a passion for engaging people from all walks of life in careers devoted to social justice and community organizing.  The candidate should be a self-starter, capable of developing new systems, knowledgeable about existing youth engagement programs in low-income communities and on college campuses. 

Principal Responsibilities 

  • Coordinate the day-to-day administration of Generation Change
    • Maintain administrative, financial, and data systems
    • Act as liaison for the project to other departments of the Center
    • Update and promote our on-line database containing information about organizing and leadership training programs throughout the U.S. , as well as databases of individuals and organizations involved with the program.   (www.leadershipdirectory.org)
  • Plan and organize events with interns, fellows, and community organizations from around the country
    • Design conference and promotional materials
    • Manage event logistics, such as location, travel, materials, menus, audio/visual needs, etc.
    • Coordinate publicity efforts with organizational allies and partners
    • Take meeting notes and produce written summaries of events
  • Support project communications
    • Provide content for organizational website and on-line communications
    • Edit and format reports and other written materials
    • Respond to inquiries and requests for information from other organizations.
  • Undertake short research projects on potential new areas of work and funding opportunities
  • Perform other administrative and program tasks, including word processing, data entry, copying, filing and telephone outreach as needed

Qualifications:  

Qualifications:

Required

  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to prioritize tasks, and work under pressure.
  • Ability to perform detail oriented work with accuracy/timeliness, and able to multi-task.
  • Demonstrated computer skills with Windows-based software; knowledge of Access and Excel database software a must.  Experience with PageMaker, Publisher, and Powerpoint a plus.
  • Experience developing program and organizational promotional material.
  • Strong team-building and interpersonal skills.
  • Outgoing personality, able to meet and relate well to diverse individuals and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Sense of humor.

Strongly Preferred: 

  • Experience with internship, recruitment, or training programs
  • Skilled in online projects and data management.
  • Experience in community, union, campus and/or youth organizing.
  • Strong commitment to building the political power of low-income people, particularly in communities of color, and increasing the number of young people choosing careers in social justice work and community organizing.
