Company Description: The Center for Labor Research and Education (Labor Center) is a public service and outreach program of the UC Berkeley Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (formerly the Institute of Industrial Relations). Founded in 1964, the Labor Center conducts research and education on issues related to labor and employment. The Labor Center's curricula and leadership trainings serve to educate a diverse new generation of labor leaders. The Labor Center conducts research projects on topics such as job quality and workforce development issues, and we work with unions, government, and employers to develop innovative policy perspectives and programs. We also provide an important source of research and information on unions and the changing workforce for students, scholars, policymakers and the public.
Job Description: The UC Berkeley Center for Labor Research and Education seeks to hire for a full-time academic Specialist position to coordinate the Labor Center’s research programs.

The Research Director will be responsible for coordinating and conducting policy-relevant research in the field of labor and employment, overseeing dissemination of research to labor and community leaders, scholars, policy makers and the public and supervising and mentoring staff and student researchers.

Duties:

1.       Coordinating and participating in the Labor Center’s research on policy-relevant topics relating to labor and employment.

2.       Working with university faculty, staff, students, labor and community leaders as well as policy makers to develop and implement research programs.

3.       Writing research reports and briefs, and overseeing the dissemination of the Center’s research.

4.       Assisting in designing public policy on topics relevant to California’s workforce: health care, workforce development, economic development, sectoral strategies, or labor standards.

5.       Organizing and developing conferences, seminars, and training programs for unions, workers, faculty, students, and the community.

6.       Administering the research budget and serving on the Labor Center’s Management Team.

7.       Supervising and mentoring staff and student researchers.

8.       Writing grants and raising funds for the Labor Center’s activities.

 
Qualifications:   Candidates should have a Master’s degree and preferably a PhD. in a relevant discipline. At least five years of experience in labor, public policy and/or quantitative research, staff supervision and project management experience is required. The candidate must be adept at working both within the university and with community stakeholders, particularly in the labor movement and/or community-based organizations. Ability to work in a collaborative environment, as well as independently, is essential. Good research and writing skills are important. Knowledge of the California workforce, labor unions, and labor and community organizations is preferred. Candidates with experience working in communities of color are highly encouraged to apply.
