Company Description: Tennessee Stand for Children, an affiliate of the national organization Stand for Children, is a statewide citizen group that lobbies and campaigns for good schools, early childhood education, and other essential programs that give children a fair chance in life. Since 1999, Stand for Children has made a substantial impact for children in Tennessee. Our three Chapters in Nashville, Memphis, and Hamilton County have won two statewide victories and eight local successes that have helped more than 330,095 children and leveraged over $104.3 million dollars for K-12 and early childhood education. Specific successes include:

• Early Education – Helping to create publicly funded pre-K programs for 9,500 low-income 4-yearolds, by helping secure $25 million dollars in state lottery funds to support the Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten for Tennessee Act of 2005 and helping win $20 million to expand the program in 2006.

• School Funding – Helping achieve a $32 million increase in funding for the Metro Nashville Schools, a $19 million increase for Shelby County Schools, and a $10 million increase in Hamilton County schools in 2005.

• Teacher Support - Winning $200,000 in city and state funding for Nashville Supports Early Education Staff , an innovative, Stand for Children-created substitute childcare teacher program that enables teachers to access daytime training and helps maintain low staff-to-child ratios in their absence.

Job Description: Stand for Children has built significant credibility and clout in Tennessee. We’re seeking a dynamic leader to serve as State Director who will work with our national leadership to move Tennessee Stand for Children to the next level of scale, impact, and financial sustainability. The State Director, supported by a high-caliber team in the national office (located in Portland, Oregon), will hire a Deputy Director, lead and manage a team of community-based field organizers, and be assisted by a part-time Administrative Assistant in Nashville.

Primary responsibilities of the position:

• Ensure Effective Field Organizing: Supervise and coordinate Stand for Children’s local organizers in order to ensure the organizers achieve increasing levels of effectiveness and local impact, reach their organization-building goals, and contribute to statewide campaigns.

• Fundraising and Budgeting: Raise sufficient 501c3 and 501c4 revenue to meet annual expenses and a specified percentage of national overhead. Create rigorous, realistic annual state budgets and monitor revenue and expenses and Chapter membership levels monthly. Develop and coordinate a statewide Stand for Children Advisory Board to assist with fundraising, networking, and credibility.

• Strategic Planning and Plan Implementation: Formulate, with staff, leaders, and key stakeholders, a three-year organizational growth strategy and then manage its implementation.

• Implement statewide campaigns, build coalitions, and ensure effective communications: Manage statewide issue development and actions/campaigns through lobbying at the state level. Develop and maintain key organizational partnerships and alliances. Build Stand for Children’s visibility statewide through effective cultivation of media contacts, partnerships with state-based public relations firms, or through other means.

 
Qualifications:   Experience Required:

• At least 5 years of community organizing, political organizing and campaigning, or relevant leadership experience. Candidates without community/political organizing or relevant experience need not apply.

• Experience supervising community organizers a plus;

• Track record of effective major donor fundraising;

• Demonstrated ability to achieve organizational outcomes in a management role;

• Statewide lobbying experience a plus;
