Carnegie-Knight Task Force

The Shorenstein Center will take a prominent role in a new initiative funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The initiative will support three distinct efforts to strengthen journalism education:curriculum enrichment (based at journalism schools at the University of Southern California; University of California, Berkeley; Northwestern University and Columbia University); News21 (an innovative student internship program) and the Carnegie-Knight Task Force on Journalism. The Task Force component of the initiative will be based here at the Shorenstein Center. Its focus will be on research and on creating a platform for Task Force members to speak out on journalism issues. Founding members include Shorenstein Center Director Alex Jones, Geoffrey Cowan of USC, John Lavine of Northwestern, Nicholas Lemann of Columbia and Orville Schell of Berkeley. Research funds are available through the Task Force to encourage the participation of scholars from other institutions.

In a July 9, 2006 Washington Post article the Carnegie-Knight Task Force--including Shorenstein Center director Alex Jones--took on the issue of government secrecy and the press. Click here to read the article.
