Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting

The annual Goldsmith Prize honors investigative reporting in a story or series of related stories that best promotes more effective and ethical conduct of government, the making of public policy, or the practice of politics. The winner receives $25,000. While the subject can address issues of foreign policy, a submission qualifies only if it has an impact on public policy in the United States at the national, regional or local level.

Applicants must explain the actual or potential impact of their entry. Broadcast or publication must have occurred within twelve months preceding the submission deadline. Submissions will be accepted only from the U.S. news media. Books will not be accepted as submissions for this prize.

All submissions must include eight copies of a completed application form and a current resume, bio or curriculum vitae.

  • Submissions from print publications must include eight copies of the story or series, and must be between 8½ x 11" to 12 x 17" in size.
  • Submissions from broadcast news organizations must include eight copies of a DVD and eight copies of a transcript, when available (if not available, eight copies of a one-page or less summary should be included).
  • Submissions from web-based news organizations must include eight copies of the story and must include a link (URL) to the live page. A screen shot with date of publication must also be included.

DEADLINE: December 31, 2009.

The Goldsmith Book Prizes

The book award consists of two categories, and a $5,000 prize will be awarded to a book in each category. Books will be judged by how well they fulfill the objective of improving government through an examination of the intersection between press, politics and public policy. Publication must have occurred within twenty-four months preceding the submission deadline. All submissions must be in English. Edited volumes will not be accepted.

Categories:

  • Academic — theoretical, research-oriented books
  • Trade — popular books targeted at a wide audience

Submissions must include a completed application form, a current resume, bio or curriculum vitae, and five copies of the book.

DEADLINE: December 31, 2009.

There is no entry fee.
