Academic Year Fellowships

The Program in Criminal Justice Policy and Management (PCJ) has initiated a fellowship program for an incoming first year student at Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) interested in criminal justice sector policy and practice.

Fellows partner with the PCJ’s senior leadership and researchers to improve interaction among students, practitioners, and scholars in the criminal justice field to create multiple channels of connection among scholarship, practice, and teaching of criminal justice policy. Fellows receive $15,000 in tuition reimbursement during their first year of study.

Applications for incoming/first year students are managed by the HKS Student Financial Services Office contemporaneous with the application process.

  • Learn about requirements and application procedure for this fellowship
  • Deadline for applications is February 28, 2013
  • The 2012-2013 Academic Year Fellowship was awarded to Claudia Newman-Martin

Summer Internships in Criminal Justice Policy and Management

The Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) Program in Criminal Justice Policy and Management (PCJ) is accepting applications from students seeking funding for summer internships in 2013. Funding is available to support Harvard students working in full-time, 10-week summer internships. Each recipient will receive up to $7,000. There are two separate summer internship opportunities.

Additionally, we invite you to learn more about our student interns and fellows.

Summer Internship Funding (HKS students)

The Program has summer internship funding available for Harvard Kennedy School students. Summer internships must relate to criminal justice policy or management. This is a broadly construed requirement and we encourage you to be creative. We can support students working at governmental criminal justice institutions (e.g., law enforcement, corrections, prosecution, indigent defense or juvenile offender agencies) or less traditional placements (e.g., non-profits or NGOs working on cross-cutting issues of trafficking, substance abuse, housing, homelessness, or mental health issues), which have a nexus to criminal justice policy or management. Please see Application Guidelines for Harvard Kennedy Students below.

Applicants can secure an internship on your own or we can help you find an engaging placement. If you'd like assistance in locating a placement, please consult with PCJ staff before submitting your application.

Additionally, we invite you to learn more about our student interns and fellows.

Application Guidelines for summer internship funding for HKS students

  1. HKS Students applying for a Summer Internship should use the Common Application available as of March 11, 2013 (HKS login required)
  2. Deadline is April 1, 2013
  3. Awards announced in April

PCJ Justice Indicators Summer Internships (Harvard students)

In addition to these internships, the Program is hoping to have four summer internships available to all Harvard students. Interns will contribute to the Indicators in Justice and Safety Project, an action research project working with criminal justice agencies and government leaders, international development organizations, donor agencies, and NGOs to develop and implement performance measures and systems of indicators for national and state justice systems that are simple, affordable, and reliable. The summer interns will work as part of the PCJ team based either in country or Cambridge. The work will include field research, data collection and analysis, interviews, observation and documentation, creation of background papers and memos. Specific work assignments depend on the country affiliation. Some or all of the summer may be spent in the country. Partner countries include Bangladesh, Jamaica, Nigeria and Sierra Leone.
