Ahmet Altan's best-selling novels and sociopolitical commentaries have been banned and burned as well as granted prizes, and for over twenty years, his columns have consistently addressed taboo issues in Turkey: so much so that he has faced court proceedings and over a century of jail time for alleged offenses against the state.  Watch his lecture at Harvard here.
