Technology Services Research Support
The Kennedy School offers faculty and Ph.D. students
(including pre-doctoral and post-doctoral students) accounts on
a Unix server, which is managed by the Harvard-MIT Data Center.
https://www.hmdc.harvard.edu/data_services.html
The
system is available by email application only.
Those interested in opening new accounts should send
an email request to Matthew Alper at matthew_alper@ksg.harvard.edu.
The Harvard-MIT Data Center maintains a large electronic library
of quantitative social science data from the Inter-University Consortium
for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), the Roper Center for
Public Opinion Research, and the National Center for Health Statistics
(NCHS), as well as many other archives and data suppliers. Many
features of this site are unique, such as over five hundred online
subsettable data sets, sophisticated browsing and searching options, automatic ordering
of new data sets from other repositories, and interactive data exploration.
The KSG Unix server is a Dell Poweredge Server system running Red
Hat Linux 7.1 with one 933MHz Pentium-3 CPU, 1GB memory, and 75
GB disk space.
In
addition to their own account, each faculty member is entitled to
have up to two RA accounts. Ph.D. students must request new accounts
through their faculty advisor, via e-mail to Matthew
Alper. Requests for new accounts are filled within 48 hours,
and faculty are notified of accounts by e-mail.
Once new accounts are established, all technical questions should be addressed to the HMDC technical staff, using an online form available at:
