The Saguaro Seminar and Robert D. Putnam has launched a multi-year joint project between Harvard University and The University of Manchester (UK) to focus on social change, and examine social issues in a transatlantic light. See press release.
The 'Harvard - Manchester Social Change' initiative organizes summer workshops to bring together faculty and graduate students from the US and UK.
The workshops are directed by faculty from Harvard University and the University of Manchester and feature leading experts in academia and government.
Workshop delegates present and discuss the political, social and economic issues associated with social change, and its effects on factors such as race relations, social stratification, civil society, the role of government and social integration at local and national level.
The 2009 workshop is open to graduate students in the social sciences at British or American universities who are working or planning to work on immigration. The workshop, co-directed by Bruce Western and Mary Waters, is organized around the broad theme of social and economic inequality and will consider research on (1) inequality and mobility, (2) politics and inequality, and (3) inequality and immigration. The application deadline is February 14, 2009. 2009 applications available here.
Every year Harvard and Manchester puts on a summer workshop to train some of the leading graduates students in the social sciences. The 2007 workshop was on and 2008 summer workshops will be on immigration, diversity and social capital. More information available here.
Funds are available from the collaboration to assist in projects of Manchester graduate students doing related research in the U.S. or Harvard graduate students doing related research in the U.K.
