SUMMER WORKSHOP ON INEQUALITY AND SOCIAL CHANGE IN BRITAIN AND THE U.S.
Sunday, June 13, and Friday, June 25 2010
Crewe Hall, Cheshire, UK
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION - must be received by MARCH 1, 2010
The developed world now faces the challenges of acute recession, rising inequality, and growing economic insecurity. The social and political dimensions of these challenges will be explored in the 2010 workshop. Joining researchers and students from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, the workshop will tackle three main themes: (1) trends in inequality and their causes, (2) the consequences of inequality for the political process and social cohesion more generally, and (3) the contours of social risks and insecurity facing families and communities. We will bring together faculty from Harvard University and the University of Manchester as well as other leading experts in academia and government to discuss the changing patterns of social mobility, the impact of immigration on inequality and the political causes and consequences of inequality in Britain, the United States, and beyond.
The workshop is open to graduate students in the social sciences at British or American universities who are working on or planning to work on topics in social and economic inequality. (Normally participating graduate students have completed at least one year of a PhD program). Approximately 20 graduate students will be accepted. The workshop is co-directed by Professor Robert Putnam (Government Department and Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University and University of Manchester), Professor Bruce Western and Professor Ed Fieldhouse (Institute for Social Change, Manchester). Approximately 20 faculty and policy makers with expertise in inequality will lecture and lead discussions. Students will also make presentations on their own research and receive feedback from faculty and student participants. Speakers in previous years (other than the organizers) included: George Akerlof, Jennifer Hochschild, Doug Massey, Mo Fiorina, Richard Alba, Ceri Peach, Richard Freeman, Anthony Heath, Robert Sampson, David Grusky, James Nazroo, Sara McLanahan, Irv Garfinkel, Steve Vertovec, Tariq Modood and Trevor Phillips.
Thanks to the generosity of the Buckley Summer Scholarships, accepted students' travel and living expenses will be fully covered by the program.
