Indian-American Congressional Candidates
- Satveer Choudhary (D-MN)
- Satveer Chaudhury, a 26-year old attorney in Fridley, Minnesota (a
suburb of Minneapolis), won the Democratic primary for a
state representative seat from his home district. Satveer has
won nearly 65% of the primary vote, compared to 35% for his challenger,
Mr. McCarthy.

Satveer's background: he was born and raised in
the Twin Cities area, and he's a recent graduate of the University of
Minnesota Law School in Minneapolis. He's been a Democratic activist
for quite a while, and he was elected the state party's affirmative
action officer. He ran for the same seat in
1995 in a special election, losing in the Democratic primary. A
Republican, Skip Carlson won the seat.
- Nimi McGonigley (R-WY)
- Ms. McGonigley recently lost her bid for the United States Senate from Wyoming, to fill the vacancy left by retiring Senator Alan Simpson. Ms. McGonigley served as a state representative in the Wyoming legislature for one-term, through 1996.
- Peter Mathews (D-CA)
- Mr. Mathews has recently lost a bid for the Democratic nomination to unseat a two-term Republican, Steve Horn. His loss came during California's primary election, and was by the slimmest of margins (less than 1% of the vote). Mr. Mathews attributes the loss to the gross variation in campaign expenditures (his opponent spent nearly $500,000 vs. Mathews' $30,000, raised exclusively from the Indian-American community.
- Dr. Yash Aggarwal (D-New City, NY)
- Dr. Aggarwal has announced his intentions to run for Congress in the 20th District
in New York, covering some northern suburbs of New York City. His
involvement with politics includes working for the AARP, a senior citizens
lobby organization, and founding the "Citizens' Congress", a local non-partisan
think tank which produced an alternative balanced budget without steep
cuts in Medicare, Medicaid, Education, Arts, the EPA, and the Corporation
for Public Broadcasting.
- Dr. Aggarwal is 55 years old, a PhD. in Seismology from Columbia University,
and a resident of Rockland County since 1975.

- Dr. Ramakrishnan Nagarajan (D-Indiana)
- Dr. Nagarajan lost his bid to win a seat in Congress from the
6th District, currently held by anti-India legislator Dan Burton.
- Dr. Nagarajan is 64 years old, a former researcher at Eli Lilly, and earned a PhD. in Chemistry from McGill University.
