GORAN HYDEN 

Goran Hyden is a Distinguished University Professor in Political Science at the University of Florida. He has had a longstanding connection to Africa where he taught at Makerere University, Uganda, University of Nairobi and University of Dar-es-Salaam in the 1960s and 1970s before serving as Social Science Research Advisor and subsequently Representative of the Ford Foundation for Eastern and Southern Africa 1978-85. His academic and professional interest over the years has been the interface between politics and development. This is reflected in his many publications, e.g. Political Development in Rural Tanzania (1969), Efficiency versus Distribution in East African Cooperatives (1973), Beyond Ujamaa in Tanzania (1980), No Shortcuts to Progress (1983), Governance and Politics in Africa, with Michael Bratton (1992), Population Growth and Agricultural Change in Africa, co-edited with Billie L. Turner and Robert W. Kates (1993), African Perspectives on Governance, co-edited with H.W.O. Okoth-Ogendo and Dele Olowu (1999), and Media and Democracy in Africa co-edited with Michael Leslie and Folu Ogundimu (2002). As Chairman of the Governing Council of the African Centre for Technology Studies, based in Nairobi, he has in recent years dealt with a range of issues relating to the role of science and technology in sustainable development.
