The Urban Seminar on Fatherhood concentrated on identifying the main predictors and barriers to involved fathering, the influence that fathers have on children, and ways in which communities, programs, and policies can work to support active fathering among urban men. Initial conclusions were that fathers' emotional and financial stability are primary requirements for active fathering, that much remains to be learned concerning how and why fathers influence children's development, and that we must work with families from the time of children's births and attend more to broader family systems (such as mother-father relationships) in efforts in increase unmarried fathers' involvement and participation in parenting.
