About the Fellowship
Through the generosity of the Nancy Germeshausen Klavans Foundation, the Women and Public Policy Program is offering a stipend for Kennedy School students to work on gender specific projects in developing countries during the summer. Although all gender specified projects are welcome, the Women and Public Policy Program is particularly interested in supporting projects that will contribute to closing the gender gap in the following areas: (Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment). The program will provide a $5,000 - $6,500 stipend for the summer.
How much funding does the Cultural Bridge Fellowship provide?
The program will provide a $5,000 stipend for the summer. A $1,500.00 travel stipend is also available for candidates who demonstrate additional travel needs. If you would like to apply for the travel stipend please include the Cultural Bridge budget form with your application.
Who is eligible?
Any current Harvard Kennedy School student that will be returning to HKS the following fall is eligible to receive this stipend. (This fellowship is geared towards Kennedy School students, however, in past years students throughout the University have been awarded the fellowship. We encourage all interested students to apply who have a project that fits the criteria of this fellowship.)
What type of work will be supported?
The stipend will support student work on a gender related project or specifically, a project that will contribute to closing the gender gap in the following areas: Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment. The project must contribute to the student’s academic and professional goals. Possible work examples include, but are in no way limited to, data collection, materials and strategy development, and program design and implementation. It is the student’s responsibility to identify his or her potential host organization and confirm a work arrangement with them.
What are the host organization's responsibilities?
The sponsoring organization must agree to provide the student with supervision and direction. The organization must provide administrative support and resources as necessary to complete the project and, if applicable, travel expenses other than for the initial travel to and from the project site.
What are the WAPPP Cultural Bridge Fellows' responsibilities?
Each Cultural Bridge Fellow is responsible for creating a contact list of at least twenty individuals to place on a listserv to which they will notify when they have completed writing a weekly blog update during their summer internship. Such updates can sometimes be sensitive in nature; if for any reason it is not possible to blog and should include an overview of the week's activities. WAPPP should be included on the contact list and should receive all listserv emails. Upon their return to the Kennedy School, students may give a presentation to members of their blog community, highlighted with pictures, mementos and examples from their experience.
Can a student accept additional remuneration from the organization?
The student can accept additional remuneration up to $3,000 from other sources. The student must report the organization's willingness to supplement WAPPP's payment at the time he or she applies for the Cultural Bridge stipend.
How will the stipend be paid?
The payment will be given to the selected students prior to the start of her/his summer internship.
How will the students be selected?
A selection committee will review the applications and make final decisions.
What materials are required?
Students should submit a written application that contains:
