After eight years at the helm of affairs at Ghana’s Central Bank, Dr. Ernest Addison retired from the Bank of Ghana in March 2025. A testament to Dr. Addison’s competent stewardship has been his adept economic management skills. Through his decisive policy actions at the Bank of Ghana, inflation declined to single digits and was maintained at those levels for over three years until the COVID-19 disruptions. Under his leadership, the Bank also resolved all insolvent financial institutions and implemented broad reforms to safeguard the stability of the financial system. These actions resulted in a stronger regulatory regime for Banks and Specialized Deposit-taking Institutions (SDIs), stronger supervision and enforcement, an enhanced corporate governance culture, and improved financial sector safety nets. Dr. Addison’s desire to deepen financial inclusion led to the piloting of a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), the e-Cedi project. In recognition of his achievements, Dr Addison was awarded the Sub-Saharan Africa Central Bank Governor of the year by Global Markets in 2020. Dr. Addison assumed the following responsibilities; Co-Chair, Economic Policy Coordination Committee for Ghana; Chairman, Monetary Policy Committee and Chairman, the Board of Directors of the Bank of Ghana; Chairman, Ghana International Bank (GHIB) London; Chairman, Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GHIPSS) Board; Member, Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI) Board; and a past Co-Chair of FSB Regional Consultative Group for Sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Addison holds a doctorate degree with specialization in monetary economics and economic development from McGill University in Canada, a master’s degree in economics and politics from the University of Cambridge, UK, and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Ghana.
