Sophie Roe is a current fourth-year medical student at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine and majored in public policy analysis at Pomona College. Prior to medical school, Sophie completed two fellowships both in Pomona, CA which focused on creating a pathway to employment for people experiencing homelessness and building community health program, respectively. In her career as a physician/researcher, Sophie hopes to use public health research methods to illuminate – qualitatively and quantitatively – disparities in healthcare access and health outcomes among people experiencing homelessness, people with substance use disorders, incarcerated people, and other marginalized populations. She hopes to use research and advocacy to advocate for changes in health care and housing policy and, working closely with communities affected, mobilize real policy change. Sophie plans to practice either psychiatry and internal medicine (combined practice) or practice solely either internal medicine or family medicine with a psychiatry focus. She is particularly drawn to Boston given that she previously interned at Boston Health Care for the Homeless and is hoping to get involved with Harvard’s Initiative on Health and Homelessness. Sophie is very much looking forward to getting to know the other Zuckerman fellows and looks forward to cross-disciplinary discussions about how to best approach social change from a public service and policy standpoint.
