Focus on your studies: Quantitative background advice from our DIB Associates

The Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DIB) Associates returned for a third session of their application-oriented webinar series. This time, they discussed the importance of a having a strong quantitative background. Throughout the session, they discussed their personal quantitative backgrounds, what could help prepare prospective students for quantitative coursework at HKS, and how to quell anxieties about this part of the application. Read below for more helpful tips.

Are you expected to come into HKS with a background in quantitative work?

There is some degree of quantitative coursework in all HKS programs, so there is an expectation that all candidates will be able to showcase a level of quantitative ability. In some programs, quantitative coursework is required in order to apply. Review the prerequisites for each program to see the requirements.

Do you have any advice for an applicant who is not feeling confident about their quantitative standardized test scores?

You might consider taking accelerated quantitative courses to help you build your skills. 

Additionally, there is an optional statement portion of the admissions application where you can describe any circumstances that inhibited your performance on a standardized test. Note, however, that the optional statement is meant for emergency cases only.

How quantitative heavy are the master’s programs?

All HKS programs are quantitatively rigorous, some more so than others. The MPA/ID Program, for example, has a quantitatively intense core curriculum. We encourage you to look at each program’s webpage to find more detailed information about the required courses.

Nidhi, what has been one of your favorite quantitative classes you’ve taken through the MPP Program?

There are a ton of cool quantitative courses at HKS—my favorite have been focused on skill building and training in statistical software.

General Tips for Quantitative Background

• There is some degree of quantitative coursework in all HKS programs.
• Look in-depth on the HKS website to find each program’s degree requirements. Browse the official names of the courses that you will be taking.
• Your GRE/GMAT and transcripts—both of which showcase your quantitative preparation for HKS—are only part of your application.
• Even if you work in a field that is not heavily quantitative in nature, HKS believes it is still important to have an understanding of quantitative methods.
• Do not let anxiety about the quantitative courses deter you from applying.
