Students on campus on computers

The application for our master’s degree programs is now open, and we understand you may have some questions about the technical logistics of completing your application. From submitting test scores to managing recommendation letters to keeping track of deadlines, our Data and Systems team—who builds the application—is here to make sure you have the support you need.

Below, you’ll find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions to help guide you as you complete your application.

Letters of Recommendation

When will my recommender receive an email notifying that I requested them write a letter?

Upon clicking the “Send to Recommender” button, the system will immediately send an email notification to the identified individual. If your recommender does not receive an email notification, please have them check their spam folder. If they still have not received the email, we recommend using an alternative email address.

Click the “Save” button to save your progress without sending an email notification to your recommender.

Can I enter a personal email address for my recommender?

While we prefer that recommenders use a work email address, we understand some employers restrict the use of work accounts. In this case, we will accept recommendations from personal addresses. If a recommender uses a personal address, we ask that they provide an explanation of why in the body of their letter.

What if I don’t need a letter of recommendation from someone I included in my list?

If you added a recommender that you no longer wish to use for consideration or would otherwise like to replace a recommender, click “Edit” next to the recommender’s name and then click the “Exclude” button. You are responsible for letting a recommender know if you no longer need a recommendation from them. There is no system-generated email to tell them they have been excluded.

How can I tell if the admissions office has received my letters of recommendation?

You will receive a notification once each letter is received, and the recommendation letter will be checked off on your application status checklist.

Test Scores

Do you verify receipt of individual test scores?

We do not verify receipt of individual test scores. You will see it marked as Completed on the checklist when we receive it.

What should I do if I send my test scores to the wrong Harvard school?

If you send your test scores to the wrong Harvard school, you will need to re-send your test scores from the testing service to Harvard Kennedy School. Harvard schools do not send test scores to each other. Official test scores must be received from the testing service directly.

  • ETS (GRE/TOEFL): Use code 3454. We are listed as “Harvard U JFK Sch Govt”
  • GMAT: Use code HRL-27-69
  • IELTS: There is no code for the IELTS; list “Harvard Kennedy School”

Deadlines

Is it too late to request a GRE/GMAT waiver for this application cycle?

The deadline to submit a GRE/GMAT waiver has passed. We are no longer accepting any waivers for the 2026-2027 application cycle.

What if I miss the application deadline?

You are responsible for ensuring that all application materials reach the HKS Office of Admissions & Financial Aid by the application deadline, which is Monday, December 1, 2025 at 12 p.m. (noon) ET. If you face extraordinary challenges, please reach out directly to your Admissions & Financial Aid counselor.
