As assistant dean and director of Harvard Kennedy School’s Office of Career Advancement (OCA), Mary Beaulieu leads a dynamic team of people who are committed to supporting HKS students and alumni as they navigate their career journeys post-HKS and beyond. While everyone at HKS cares about what our students do in the world through HKS, the OCA team is specifically dedicated to supporting student and alumni career success. What does the Office of Career Advancement do?
Career Counseling: OCA provides personalized career coaching and guidance to help students identify their career goals, explore different career paths, and develop strategies for achieving their aspirations.
Job Search Resources: The office provides resources for job searching, including workshops on résumé writing, interviewing skills, and networking strategies. We also maintain job boards and databases of job opportunities in the public and private sectors, non-profits, and international organizations.
Networking Opportunities: OCA organizes networking events, career fairs, and alumni panels, connecting students with alumni and professionals in various fields. This helps students build valuable relationships and gain insights into different career paths.
Internship and Fellowship Support: We assist students in their search for internships and fellowships that align with their interests and career goals, which are critical for gaining practical experience.
Workshops and Events: OCA hosts a variety of workshops, speaker events, and panel discussions featuring industry leaders and alumni. These events provide insights into current trends in public policy, administration, and related fields.
Alumni Support: We offer career support to alumni, helping them navigate career transitions long after they graduate.
Employer Engagement: OCA collaborates with employers to facilitate recruitment events and ensure that students are aware of job openings that match their skills and interests.
What is your favorite part about working for OCA?
Without question, it is working directly with HKS students and alumni! They are curious, smart, enormously talented, and passionately committed to creating a better world. I get great satisfaction in helping them see possibilities for themselves.
How can students connect with you?
Current students are able to schedule appointments with us throughout the school year, and we also extend our services to alumni of HKS. Prospective students can meet us in person at New Admit Day in the spring, where we will share more about the ways we work with HKS students.
If you could offer any advice to prospective students, what would you say?
As you consider HKS, research the opportunities and think carefully about how an HKS experience and degree fits with what you seek for your future life and career. If it is right for you, apply!
