MPA Orientation Leaders behind HKS table

At the beginning of every school year, Orientation Leaders welcome first-year students to Harvard Kennedy School by leading and mentoring them through their first few weeks in Cambridge.

Master in Public Administration (MPA) Orientation Leaders Hagan Black MPA/MBA (Wharton) 2026 and Alice Zhou MPA/MBA (Wharton) 2026 reflected on their time as “OLs” and offered advice for prospective students.

Read what they shared below.

Why I Became an Orientation Leader

When I first stepped on campus at Harvard Kennedy School, my Orientation Leaders immediately helped me feel welcome. They were willing to answer all my questions, no matter how minor, and set the tone for the community we wanted to build as a program. Knowing how daunting starting a graduate program can be—especially in a new country for many in our cohort—I hoped to pay that forward to the incoming class. I wanted to bring both my energy and empathy to the next MPA class, ensuring that every new student, regardless of their background or prior experiences, felt welcomed and excited for the short but impactful two years ahead.

How I spent my summer

I spent my summer in Seattle, Washington, working at Amazon within the retail organization, gaining experience in the tech industry, and learning how to navigate a large organization while staying agile. I collaborated cross-functionally to deliver a strategic growth project for my team and built deep knowledge in a new industry. Outside of work, I made the most of my first time living in the Pacific Northwest—hiking in nearby national parks, paddleboarding on the lake, and soaking up the beautiful nature in the region.

My favorite events at Orientation

  • Small Group Dinners: One of my favorite MPA Orientation traditions is the small group dinners, where students are randomly grouped into teams of ~6. Each group is taken on a Trader Joe’s run to pick out ingredients and then cook a meal together. It is a fun, low-pressure way to get to know each other and form deeper connections while tackling the adventure of cooking as a team. We have had some people reveal their hidden talents as chefs through these dinners!

  • Boat Cruise: This year, the MPP and MPA programs had a joint boat cruise during one evening of Orientation. This was a great opportunity to meet people across programs, enjoy a relaxing evening with beautiful views of the Boston Harbor, and connect with each other outside of the classroom.

Advice for prospective students

From day one on campus, you will hear a lot about the importance of knowing your ‘why.’ With so many incredible opportunities at HKS—from research to building a network to attending speaker events and everything in between—having clarity on your purpose helps you prioritize and make the most of your time here. At the same time, don’t worry if your ‘why’ shifts or looks different from what you expected. Being open to new opportunities can lead to some of the most meaningful experiences you will have at HKS and beyond.

Why I became an Orientation Leader

When I arrived to HKS last year, Orientation Leaders made me feel welcomed and reassured me that I belonged in this community. That support was invaluable, and I wanted to pay it forward. For me, being an Orientation Leader was about helping new students feel both grounded and excited as they begin their HKS journey.

How I spent my summer

I was an intern at Novartis on their U.S. Market Access Strategy team, an area that connected both my business and healthcare policy interests. I also spent time working with the other Orientation Leaders and members on the HKS staff to plan and organize Orientation Week—collaborating on day-to-day scheduling, incoming student logistics, budget, and community building activities.

My favorite events at Orientation

  • Small group conversations where students opened up and quickly built trust
  • Faculty sessions that made big ideas feel personal and actionable
  • Speed friending, which was a fast-paced and fun way to meet classmates

Advice for prospective students

  • Be authentic in your application. Highlight what truly motivates you and the impact you want to make—HKS values purpose-driven applicants. Ideally, have a coherent narrative aligning your past achievements and background with your future aspirations.
  • Show openness to growth. You don’t need to have every career detail mapped out—demonstrating curiosity, humility, and willingness to learn resonates strongly.
  • Engage with the HKS community early. Reach out to current students, attend events, and ask questions. This research not only helps your application but also gives you a real sense of whether HKS is the right fit.
  • Remember the bigger picture. HKS isn’t just about academics—it’s about the people, networks, and opportunities that can shape your path far beyond the classroom. Compellingly explain why you’re applying to HKS, and how it will help you achieve your long-term goals.
