Four students talking at the Ash Center Open House
Students learned more about the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at the Center's Open House on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.

At the beginning of each academic year, the research centers at Harvard Kennedy School host Open House events to introduce new and returning students to the centers’ initiatives and offerings. The Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation Open House brought together many Harvard students to explore the center’s opportunities.

The Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation develops ideas and fosters practices for equal and inclusive, multiracial, and multiethnic democracy and self-government. Communications Coordinator Colette Anton discusses the Center’s Open House and how students can get involved.

What are you hoping students took from the Ash Center’s Open House?

I hope that students got to make meaningful connections with their peers as well as the Ash Center’s staff, faculty and fellows. Our Open House also gave students the chance to learn more about the distinct focuses of the programs and initiatives housed at Ash, and inquire about opportunities for student funding, research assistantships, and study groups.

What networking opportunities did students have at this event?

The Open House gave students an opportunity to meet and talk one-on-one with staff, faculty, and fellows from all six Ash Center flagship programs about their research interests and learn how to get involved across programs. These flagship programs include:

Archon Fung smiling and speaking into a microphone
Winthrop Laflin McCormack Professor of Citizenship and Self-Government and Director of the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation Archon Fung spoke at the beginning of the Open House and introduced the sessions at the event.

What resources does the Ash Center provide?

The Ash Center supports HKS student-level events, initiatives, and independent studies, sponsors not-for-credit study groups, and hosts workshops for HKS and Harvard students. The Center also offers multiple scholarships every academic year. Check out the For Students page on the Ash Center website for more information on student resources!

What advice would you give to students that could not attend the Open House?

To learn more about upcoming events, research initiatives, and the work of the Ash community, students can subscribe to the Ash Center’s weekly newsletter.

Please describe the work you do with the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation.

As the Communications Coordinator at the Ash Center, and I manage the Center's social media channels, produce and distribute our newsletters to highlight the research and events from our six flagship programs, and support the weekly production of our “Terms of Engagement” podcast and livestream, hosted by Archon Fung and Stephen Richer.
