At the beginning of each academic year, the research centers at Harvard Kennedy School host Open House events to introduce new and returning students to the centers’ initiatives and offerings. The Harvard Center for International Development (CID) Open House on Tuesday, September 9, 2025 brought together many Harvard students to explore the center’s opportunities.

At CID, Associate Director of Student and Fellow Programming Eve Margolis focuses on creating meaningful opportunities for students to engage with international development through internships, research, seminars, mentorship, and community-building initiatives. In the Q&A below, she discusses CID’s Open House and how students can get involved.

What are you hoping students learned from the Center for International Development Open House?

I hope students left the CID Open House with a clear sense of how they can get involved with CID during their time at Harvard. Our goal is to help students connect with staff, faculty, fellows, and peers who share a passion for international development. We want students to know that CID is a supportive hub for exploring internships, research, or career paths in development.

What networking opportunities did students have at this event?

Students had the chance to connect directly with various members of the CID community, including staff to learn about our programs and resources, fellows to hear about their research and our fall student seminar opportunities, and past interns to gain insight into the Global Internship Program. They were also able to connect with current student ambassadors who are actively engaged in shaping CID’s student programming and supporting peer involvement, as well as CID’s different research programs and initiatives, such as Reimagining the Economy, GEAR UP, and the Growth Lab. We hope these interactions gave students a well-rounded understanding of how CID supports development work across the Harvard community.

What resources does the Center for International Development provide?

CID offers a wide range of opportunities for students interested in international development. These include internships through the CID Global Internship Program, Student Seminars focused on real-world development challenges that are taught by researchers and practitioners who have expertise on those topics, research support and funding for student-led and faculty-aligned projects, and mentorship and networking with leading development scholars and practitioners.
