Embrace the emotions
What no one told me about applying to Harvard is that the process itself can be unexpectedly meaningful. Instead of treating the application as a burden, I came to enjoy the reflective nature of writing my essays. Looking back on my journey forced me to confront moments I had overlooked for years. At times, my tears were a reminder of how far I had come. The experience is beautiful—don’t fear the vulnerability that may arise when you write honestly about your life.
Be authentic
Don’t invent stories or try to predict what the committee wants to hear. Sit with yourself, look deeply into your past, and choose the experiences that truly shaped you. Your genuine voice will come through naturally on the page, and that is far more powerful than any polished performance.
“Authenticity matters more than anything. Don’t invent stories or try to predict what the committee wants to hear. Sit with yourself, look deeply into your past, and choose the experiences that truly shaped you.”
Know that you belong here
Applying to Harvard Kennedy School has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. Yes, the applicant pool is competitive, but remember: the people reading your application are real humans searching for authentic stories. I often imagine the admissions team as gardeners traveling the world with a basket, choosing unique flowers to bring back to the Kennedy School—where they belong.
