The research centers at Harvard Kennedy School are a great resource for students to get involved with real-world policy issues. One such center is the Malcolm Wiener Center for Social Policy, which aims to advance policy initiatives that empower people to solve the most urgent social challenges and questions of our times.

What does the Malcolm Wiener Center for Social Policy focus on?
The Malcolm Wiener Center for Social Policy works to increase social and economic wellbeing, equity, and opportunity through data-driven research, hands-on teaching, and collaborative public engagement. We accomplish this work through the teaching and research of our many faculty affiliates and through our four programs: the Program in Criminal Justice Policy and Management, the Stone Program in Wealth Distribution, Inequality, and Social Policy, the Shift Project, and the Reimagining the Economy Project.
What resources does the Malcolm Wiener Center provide to students?
The Center invests in students at the master’s, predoctoral, and postdoctoral level. Throughout each academic year we sponsor seminars, John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum events, and conferences on a variety of social policy topics. We also support Stone PhD Scholars and Wiener PhD Scholars with interdisciplinary training, mentorship, and research experience alongside center faculty exploring social policy problems and the most important current topics.

How can students get involved with the Malcolm Wiener Center at HKS?
Students can apply for research assistant positions posted on the HKS Hub and our website, participate in study groups through initiatives like Reimagining the Economy, attend our seminar series and signature lectures such as the annual Stone Lecture in Economic Inequality. For the latest news from our center, including information on new opportunities as they arise, I recommend students sign up for the MWC newsletter. I’d also highly recommend that students sign up for the Stone Program’s newsletter, Program in Criminal Justice Policy and Management’s newsletter, and the Reimagining the Economy newsletter.
What is your role with the Center?
I am the interim Assistant Director of Communications. My work centers around ensuring the Center's research and initiatives are shared through strategic communications, content development, media engagement, and storytelling that connects scholarship to social impact.
