Requests for Information

The Office of the Registrar provides a range of services to alumni, including assistance with the below documentation requests.

Transcripts

Harvard Kennedy School has partnered with Parchment in order to provide a more convenient transcript ordering process for our students and alumni. All requests for official transcripts (paper and electronic), including those with supplemental attachments, should be placed online through Parchment. You may upload any required attachments as part of the online order process and can order official transcripts using any major credit card.

This online service is available 24 hours/day 365 days/year. If you need help or have questions with ordering a transcript, operators are available Monday–Thursday from 7:00AM–8:00PM (CST) and Friday from 7:00AM–5:00PM (CST) at +1.847.716.3005.

The site provides detailed information regarding placing an order, including delivery options and fees. To ensure confidentiality and to comply with federal regulations governing educational records, you must also provide appropriate authorization which will be presented as part of the ordering process. In addition to the convenience of credit card payment, the online service provides email notifications once orders are received and processed. Your credit card will only be charged after your order has been completed.

Certification of Enrollment & Degree Verification

Harvard Kennedy School has authorized the National Student Clearinghouse to issue enrollment and degree verification to alumni who graduated from a degree program. Enrollment and degree verification through the National Student Clearinghouse provides instant online verification of degrees or dates of attendance claimed by job applicants.

CERTIFICATES OF ENROLLMENT

Certificates of enrollment include your name, the dates enrolled at Harvard Kennedy School, and your enrollment status (full or part time). Current students may request and receive a certificate of enrollment by logging onto Clearinghouse’s Enrollment Verification.

DEGREE VERIFICATION

Degree verification is available to alumni who were awarded a degree. Degree verification includes your date of enrollment and degree received. Alumni may request degree verification by logging onto Clearinghouse’s Degree Verify and selecting "HARVARD KENNEDY SCHOOL OF GOVERNMENT" from the menu.

EXECUTIVE EDUCATION VERIFICATION

Verification is available to individuals who have completed an Executive Education program at Harvard Kennedy School, and may be requested by email. Learn more about Executive Education programs at HKS.

Loan Deferment

A loan deferment provides confirmation that you were officially registered in a degree program at Harvard Kennedy School. You may have deferred your federal loans while you were enrolled at HKS on, at least, a half-time basis as well as other federal loans for your undergraduate or other graduate school programs.

The Office of the Registrar uploads enrollment details to the National Student Loan Clearinghouse database three times each semester. Loan deferments must have been signed by you when you were an enrolled student and submitted to the registrar. The registrar sends deferments to the appropriate authorizing agencies, to be deemed official.

Email the Office of the Registrar if you have questions specific to a loan deferment you submitted while you were enrolled in a degree program at HKS.

Replacement Diploma

You may request a replacement diploma from the Office of the Registrar if your original Harvard Kennedy School diploma has been lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed. If your diploma was damaged, or if you are requesting a diploma to reflect a name change, you must send us your original diploma. You cannot hold two diplomas.

The registrar can only process your request if you provide the following:

  • Your full name
  • Diploma name (name recorded on the original diploma)
  • Degree awarded
  • Date the degree was granted
  • Original signature
  • Shipping address, including a telephone number
  • Reason for the replacement
  • A $150 check or money order made payable to Harvard University

It will take 4-6 weeks to print your replacement diploma. When ready, it will be sent via insured and certified mail. Include your current email address if you would like to receive a notification when your replacement diploma is on its way to you.

Be sure to note the following before sending your letter of request:

  • If you are replacing a damaged diploma, it must be returned to the HKS Office of the Registrar to process your request
  • If a diploma is destroyed in a fire or a catastrophic event, we require a copy of the insurance or police report
  • If a diploma was stolen, we require a copy of the insurance or police report
  • If the diploma is lost in a move, we require some type of proof, such as an insurance report or notarized statement stating the facts

If you want your diploma to reflect your legal name change, you must return your original diploma to the HKS Office of the Registrar. You cannot hold two diplomas. Provide us with a copy of the court document or notarized letter confirming your legal name change.

Notarized Documents

NOTE: Due to COVID-19 the registrar is unable to complete any notary requests at this time.

TRANSCRIPTS

Notarized official Harvard Kennedy School transcripts are ordered through the National Student Clearinghouse website. Note in the special instructions field that your transcript must be notarized.

DEGREE VERIFICATION LETTERS OR CERTIFICATES OF ENROLLMENT

Email the Office of the Registrar if you require notarized Harvard Kennedy School degree verification letters or certificates of enrollment. For verification purposes, you will need to send the email request from your HKS alumni email account. Be sure to include your current mailing address in your email or if you will pick up your notarized document in person once it is ready.

DIPLOMAS

Harvard Kennedy School does not keep copies of your original diploma.

Email the Office of the Registrar if you need a notarized copy of your diploma, and schedule an appointment to bring your original diploma to the registrar's office in person. If you cannot bring your diploma in person, you may mail your original diploma along with a prepaid private carrier label and envelope (e.g. using UPS, FedEx, DHL, etc.). We will return your original diploma along with the notarized copy.

The registrar can only process your request if you provide the following:

Diplomas and notarized copies will only be mailed to you. The Office of the Registrar cannot mail diplomas or notarized copies to third parties.

If you need an apostille, you must make your own arrangements with the Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to send the notarized copy of your document. Contact the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Office of the Secretary, Public Records Division for details.
