Roberta Goodnow MC/MPA 1989 is now retired after a public service career in the Seattle area, where she worked at nonprofits including The Seattle Foundation. Here’s why she gives back to Harvard Kennedy School.

What inspired you to make your first gift to the Kennedy School?

Even before I attended the Kennedy School, I’ve had one of my favorite quotes from John F. Kennedy on my desk.  It reads, “One person can make a difference, and everyone must try.” Supporting the students who came after me and helping them make a difference is why I made my first gift to the Kennedy School.  I was fortunate to attend and wanted to ensure that students who need financial assistance would have the opportunity to learn and then lead in public service.

Why do you give to the HKS Fund?

One of my favorite aspects is that it supports interns who otherwise would not have opportunities because they could not accept unpaid internships.

What led you to pursue your degree at the Kennedy School? How did your time at the School affect your career and life?

I pursued an additional degree at the Kennedy School because I needed ideas, motivation, and time to think about my next career move. Life at school gave me innovative skills in negotiation, leadership, global events, and critical thinking.  I made friends with whom I keep in touch with some 30 years later.

What impact do you feel your giving has?

In this time of intense criticism of public service, giving has invisibly connected me with students who will lead and make a difference in lives throughout the world.  And every Kennedy School graduate will make a difference.

Make a gift to support the next generation of leaders
