A message from Dean Douglas Elmendorf, Academic Dean Suzanne Cooper, and Academic Dean David Deming

To HKS Faculty and Staff,

We are delighted to pass on this news about faculty chairs:

Jeff Liebman will move over from his current chair to become the Robert W. Scrivner Professor of Social Policy. Jeff has been on the Kennedy School faculty since 1996. He directs our Taubman Center for State and Local Government and our Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston. Jeff’s research and practice are centered on the Government Performance Lab, which he founded and leads; GPL works with state and local governments to design and implement reforms to the ways they provide public services.

Deirdre Bloome will become the Peter and Isabel Malkin Professor of Public Policy. Deirdre joined our faculty in 2021. She has additional faculty appointments in FAS’s Sociology Department and at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies. Deirdre’s research focuses on socioeconomic inequality, mobility, and insecurity.

Danny Schneider will become the Malcom Wiener Professor of Social Policy. Danny joined the HKS faculty in 2020 and has a faculty appointment in the Sociology Department as well. He is co-director of The Shift Project, which studies how precarious and unpredictable work schedules affect economic security and wellbeing.

We are also pleased to report that Tarek Masoud is now the chair of our Democracy, Politics, and Institutions area. Tarek is the Ford Foundation Professor of Democracy and Governance and the faculty director of our Middle East Initiative. His research focuses on political development in Arabic-speaking and Muslim-majority countries. We are grateful to Arthur Applbaum for his long service as DPI area chair.

Please join us in offering congratulations to Jeff, Deirdre, Danny, and Tarek!

Best,
Doug, David, and Suzanne
