Founding Faculty Affiliates of the Global LGBTQI+ Human Rights Program at the Carr Center

The Carr Center’s Global LGBTQI+ Human Rights Program, recently launched this past May, aims to expand research and training to advance the human rights of LGBTQI+ people worldwide. Led by Carr Center Director Mathias Risse, Faculty Program Chair Timothy Patrick McCarthy, and Program Director Diego Garcia Blum, the program will address the escalating crisis of violence and discrimination against LGBTQI+ individuals and communities globally.

In an exciting new development, the program is delighted to announce its Founding Faculty Affiliates, a diverse coalition of distinguished scholars and practitioners across Harvard who will serve as an invaluable source of support with research, training, programs, convenings, and more.

“What an honor it is to bring together such an impressive community of leading scholars, teachers, and practitioners with a demonstrated commitment to advancing the rights, freedom, and dignity of LGBTQI+ peoples across the globe,” says McCarthy. “This is a historic moment for Harvard at a time of great urgency in the world. We hope and believe that these new and ongoing collaborations across school, discipline, expertise, and lived experience will help us transform human wrongs into human rights—for queer people and for all people.”

The Founding Faculty Affiliates represent eight schools across Harvard, showcasing both the need and the desire for a program that explores pressing LGBTQI+ human rights issues at an international level. LGBTQI+ rights touch all facets of our life and society, and the vast range of expertise of the Founding Faculty Affiliates shines a light on its cross-disciplinary and cross-sector importance, with faculty hailing from Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Graduate School of Education, T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harvard Divinity School, Harvard Law School, Harvard Medical School, and Harvard Business School.

“I’m delighted and deeply humbled by the overwhelming support from our faculty,” says Garcia Blum. “Their wisdom and leadership will be an indispensable bedrock as we strive to equip the next generation of LGBTQI+ leaders with the tools they need to change the world.”
