To highlight Intersex Awareness Day 2024, observed on October 26, the Global LGBTQI+ Human Rights Program at the Carr Center teamed up with Outright International to host a webinar focused on building awareness of Intersex identity. The webinar began with an initial "Intersex 101" lecture, followed by a panel featuring four intersex activists who discussed their personal stories, the efforts they're involved in, and their goals and aspirations for the future.
We were joined by Jennifer Aliu-Kadiri, Programme Officer for Diversity and Inclusion, Intersex Nigeria; Kimberly Zieselman, Senior Advisor Global Intersex Rights, OutRight International; Kristian Ranđelović, Executive Director, XY Spectrum; Timothy Patrick McCarthy, Faculty, HGSE and HKS; and Vidda Guzzo, Law, Policy & Research Director, União Libertária de Pessoas Trans e Travestis (ULTRA).
"Intersex people really aren't that rare, we've just been mostly invisible. Nearly 2% of the population is born Intersex. And that's similar to the population of redheads or people with green eyes. It's higher than the incidence of identical twins, and if you took all the Intersex people in the world right now and brought them together, it's about equal to the population of either Mexico or Japan," said Zieselman.
