CID Executive Director Marcela Escobari and Research Fellow Martina Viarengo have been named Young Global Leaders (YGL) for the World Economic Forum's Class of 2013. Escobari and Viarengo will join exceptional leaders from around the world who are working to impact global challenges. Their nominations build on a long list of previous Harvard selectees.
Young Global Leaders, who are under the age of 40, are selected through a rigorous process from thousands of candidates, and have a wide range of expertise. The 199 honorees come from 70 countries and have specialties in all segments of society, including academia, arts and culture, civil society, government, media and non-profits.
Other distinguished honorees in the class of 2013 include Chelsea Clinton and Nate Silver. Recent Harvard honorees include Sendhil Mullainathan (Faculty of Arts and Sciences), Michael Kremer (Faculty of Arts and Sciences) and Laura Alfaro (Harvard Business School).
As Executive Director of CID, Escobari sets the strategic vision and growth of the center, and has helped transform it into a leading hub for breakthrough research on growth, governance and evidence-based policy design.
Viarengo is a Research Fellow at the Growth Lab, and an Assistant Professor in the Economics Department at the Graduate Institute of Geneva. Professor Viarengo is a specialist in applied microeconomics and development. Her research focuses on comparative public policy, gender and international migration.
Honorees from the Class of 2013 will convene at an annual summit in Yangon, Myanmar, and will join more than 700 leaders who comprise the Forum on Young Global Leaders. The program will include meetings with Myanmar government representatives, the business community and civil society, first-hand experience working with local organizations and communities, as well as workshops and cross-mentorship initiatives.
