My research examines how science is produced, organized, and used over the long run, drawing on tools from computational linguistics and machine learning. Recent projects analyze how scientific knowledge shaped downstream technological innovation during the First and Second Industrial Revolutions; trace the intellectual roots of a biologized understanding of race and human difference in 19th century periodicals; and examine how scientific authority was constructed in British parliamentary documents and case law.
