This book examines how the Internet’s original “generative” architecture—an open system enabling widespread innovation and participation—is increasingly threatened by the rise of closed, centrally controlled technologies and platforms. Zittrain argues that tethered devices, proprietary ecosystems, and expanding digital control mechanisms risk undermining innovation, freedom, and user autonomy online. The book explores the legal, technical, and social implications of this shift and proposes ways to preserve an open and participatory Internet.
