This paper examines how access to energy infrastructure shapes patterns of industrial specialization. Using the construction of emergency oil pipelines during World War II as a natural experiment, the authors show that regions gaining improved access to petroleum inputs experienced lasting changes in industrial composition. The findings highlight the role of energy access in shaping local comparative advantage and long-run industrial development.
