Not Ready for Democracy: Modernization, Pluralism and the Arab Spring

This chapter examines the challenges facing democratization in the aftermath of the Arab Spring uprisings. Masoud analyzes the relationship between modernization, political pluralism, and democratic readiness in Arab societies, questioning assumptions that popular uprisings would naturally lead to stable democratic governance. The chapter explores how institutional weakness, ideological polarization, and competing social forces complicated democratic transitions after 2011. Situating the Arab uprisings within broader comparative debates about democratization, the chapter argues that the outcomes of revolutionary moments are contingent rather than predetermined.
