Political Leadership and the Urban Poor

This article examines the relationship between political leadership and the lived experiences of the urban poor in rapidly growing cities. Das and Walton explore how informal political practices, patronage systems, and local leadership structures mediate access to services, representation, and state institutions for marginalized urban populations. The authors argue that understanding urban poverty requires attention not only to economic deprivation but also to the political and social relationships through which citizens engage with authority and governance.
