November 22, 2023, Opinion: "The current unwinding of the Medicaid Continuous Enrollment Provision is estimated to cause up to 24 million people to lose coverage. While some people are disenrolled because changes in income make them ineligible, others may lose coverage because the renewal process poses administrative challenges such as understanding or completing paperwork and responding to notices within required time frames. As of October 2023, “procedural reasons,” not lack of eligibility, accounted for up to 72 percent of the more than nine million people who have already been disenrolled. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, concerned that eligible people are losing coverage and states are not meeting federal requirements, has ordered states to review and mitigate system errors immediately.
