The Reader in Sustainability Science is intended to provide reading and research materials for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students at low cost (no cost in developing countries) in formats that take advantage of electronic media and are readily revisable reflecting the rapid development of such a new interdisciplinary activity. These readings will provide an overview of sustainable development and human-environment systems; identify core scientific questions and societal problems, and offer examples of innovative solutions covering a range of sectors, places, and peoples. Supporting the Reader will be a mini-library for faculty, researchers, and advanced graduate students consisting of hundreds of downloadable professional articles paralleling the reader organization. Both the reader and mini-library will be available on the internet as part of the AAAS hosted Forum: Science and Innovation for Sustainable Development at http://www.sustainabilityscience.org. Robert Kates, Senior Research Fellow (former Director, World Hunger Program, Brown University; Member, US National Academy of Sciences; US Presidential Medal of Science recipient), Akin Mabogunje, Development Policy Center, Nigeria, and Pamela Matson, Dean, School of Earth Sciences, Stanford University are editing the Reader with the assistance of contributing editors William Clark, Nancy Dickson, Pim Martens, Mohan Munasingh, Tom Parris, and Elizabeth Reinhardt.
