Inundation District Documentary Screening

On March 4th, we learned how local policy intertwines with design, development and climate change during this feature-length film about the implications of Boston’s decision to building a new waterfront district —at sea level.

The Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston and Harvard University Graduate School of Design held a documentary screening of The Boston Globe's "Inundation District" and a candid conversation surrounding climate change, policy and community design.

Event Panelists Included:

  • David Abel, Director "Inundation District" and the Boston Globe, Moderator
  • JocCole Burton, Chief Executive Officer, Maven Construction
  • Elizabeth Christoforetti, Assistant Professor of Architecture, Harvard and Founding Principal SuperNormal
  • Chris Osgood, Senior Advisor Infrastructure, City of Boston

The screening was co-sponsored with The Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability at Harvard University and HKS Shorenstein Center's Documentary Film in the Public Interest Initiative.

"Inundation District" is a 79-minute documentary by The Boston Globe that examines the paradox of a wealthy, educated city constructing a high-tech district on landfill at sea level despite warnings from scientists about rising sea levels and intensifying storms. This area, built after such warnings, faces significant flood risks, leading to its ironic nickname, the Inundation District. The film premiered in fall 2023 at the GlobeDocs Film Festival.
