Advancing women and gender equality in peace negotiations is a burgeoning area of attention for scholarship and practice. Important questions include: How have women participated in and contributed to peace processes? How do gender dynamics influence peace negotiation processes? What are the long-term implications of more gender-equitable participation in peace negotiations?
WAPPP’s Fall 2023 Speaker Series brought together 15 scholars and leaders in practice to examine these timely and important questions. The speaker series opened with scholars providing a theoretical grounding in this subject area and highlighting opportunities for practical and research progress. The series then built from that foundation to address practical applications and specific case examples, and culminated with a panel of leaders in practice from around the globe celebrating advancements and illuminating challenges ahead.
Topics included selection of women peace delegates, patriarchy in peace negotiations, and case studies from Northern Ireland to Colombia.
The series was co-sponsored by the Belfer Center and Harvard Law School's Program on Negotiation, chaired by Hannah Riley Bowles and organized with doctoral students and WAPPP fellows Elizabeth Good and Alex McAuliff.
